Shenzhen Becomes China's Biggest PC Producer: Vice-mayor

South China's boomtown Shenzhen has become China's largest producer of computers and telecommunications equipment, a conference was told Friday.

Li Decheng, vice-mayor of Shenzhen, told a national conference that Shenzhen produced 1.07 million computers last year, about 20 percent of the country's total, and program-control switchboards capable of handling 35 million lines, about 53 percent of the country's total.

The output of information technology products totaled 80 billion yuan (nearly 10 billion U.S. dollars), about 15 percent of the country's total.

Leading Chinese and international IT producers, including Huawei, Zhongxing, IBM, Compact, Lucent, have set up manufacturing centers in Shenzhen, which borders Hong Kong,
