Senior Military Official Meets New Zealand Guest

A Chinese military leader said Friday, September 14 that the Chinese government condemns the terrorist attack that took place in the United States, and expresses condolences to the U.S. government, its people and the family members of the victims.

Zhang Wannian, vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission, told visiting Graham Fortune, secretary of defense of New Zealand, that China and New Zealand are in the Asia-Pacific region, and there are no conflicts between their interests.

The two countries bear the responsibilities of safeguarding regional security and stability and promoting prosperity, he said.

Zhang said that the Chinese government has attached importance to developing relations with New Zealand, and is ready to push forward long-term, stable, healthy and all-round relations between China and New Zealand.

Zhang recalled his visit to New Zealand this April, and said that the Chinese and New Zealand militaries have maintained good development momentum.

He said he believes that the secretary's visit will further the military relations between the two countries.

Zhang also briefed the guests on the Chinese government's stance on the Taiwan issue.

Fortune said that the relations between New Zealand and China are important. Prime Minister of New Zealand Helen Elizabeth Clark visited China this April, and will participate in the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting to be held in Shanghai.

He said that New Zealand is ready to promote state and military relations with China.
