Indian President Hopes for Better Development of India-China Ties

India is expecting a better development for India-China relations with continuous exchange of high-level visits between the two countries, Indian President K R Narayanan said Friday in New Delhi.

The president made these remarks while receiving the credential presented by new Chinese Ambassador to India Hua Junduo in the Presidential Palace here on Friday.

Narayanan, who paid a friendly visit to China in May 2000 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Sino-Indian diplomatic ties, told the Chinese ambassador that he still had a fresh memory of last year's successful visit.

He said he was very much pleased to see that India-China relations had turned steady and had progressed in various aspects following his trip to China.

Citing the scheduled visit to China in October by Indian External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh and a much expected visit to India by Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji later this year, the president said that the exchange of high-level visits between the two countries had been continuing recently, adding that India was expecting a "better development" for bilateral relations.

Commenting on the recent terrorist attacks on the United States, Narayanan asserted that under the current international circumstances, it had been all the more necessary for India and China to carry out close cooperation.

On China's imminent access to the World Trade Organization (WTO), he stated that India and China share many common interests under the WTO regime and should work closely together to safeguard the interests of the developing world.

The Chinese ambassador, who arrived here on August 17, said that since China and India are close neighbors, the Chinese government firmly follows the policy of developing a friendly neighborly relationship with India.

The four-point common understanding reached by Indian President Narayanan and Chinese President Jiang during last year's presidential visit has served and will always serve as guidelines for the smooth development of Sino-Indian relations, the ambassador noted.
