Vice Premier Qian, Powell Talk on Fighting Terrorism

Chinese Vice Premier Qian Qichen and US Secretary of State Colin Powell Thursday night exchanged views on counterterrorism issues in a scheduled phone conversation.

Powell again extended thanks to the Chinese government and the Chinese people for their condolences and support to their American counterparts over the terrorist attacks that hit the United States Tuesday.

Powell said the US side looked forward to cooperation with the Chinese side in fighting terrorism.

Qian said President Jiang Zemin and President George W. Bush talked over the phone Wednesday night on the devastating attacks in New York City and Washington D.C.

"I would like to take this occasion to express my sincere sympathy to you and heartfelt mourning for the deceased," he said.

"We have constantly opposed any kind of terrorism, and we believe that the fight against terrorism needs cooperation of the international community," he said. "The Security Council of the United Nations has unanimously adopted a resolution condemning terrorism, and we are willing to, together with the US side, enhance cooperation in this field."
