China's Retail Sales Up in August

Retail sales in China surged 9.6 percent in August over one year ago to 288.9 billion yuan (35 billion U.S. dollars), the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) announced Thursday.

The NBS said that retail sales growth rates in cities continued to surpass those of rural areas in August. The growth rate of retail sails in urban areas reached 11 percent year-on-year in August, 3.8 percentage points higher than that in rural areas.

According to the NBS, sales promoting activities during the summer season and rapid growth in the sales of stationery and household electric appliances were the main factors driving up retail sales.
