China to Work With World to Combat Terrorism: Vice-MinisterChina will work with all countries across the world to combat international terrorism, which has become a concern for the international community, a senior Chinese diplomat said Thursday.Wang Guangya, vice-minister of Foreign Affairs, said at a press conference that terrorism is now a global issue that should be addressed worldwide. China will, whether in the United Nations or in a regional cooperation framework, actively participate in and support anti-terrorism efforts by the international community. Following the tragic attacks in Washington D.C. and New York, Chinese President Jiang Zemin and U.S. President George W. Bush exchanged ideas over the phone. Bush stressed that he will come to China, as planned, to attend the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Shanghai next month, and visit Beijing afterwards, Wang said at the press conference. The U.S. is an important member of APEC and can play a significant role in the APEC process, Wang said. The meetings to be held in Shanghai will go ahead as scheduled. China will pay great attention to security issues during the meetings there, he stressed, adding that Shanghai is one of the safest places in the world. |
