China Condemns Terrorist Attacks on US

Chinese Permanent Representative to the United Nations Wang Yingfan on Wednesday strongly condemned the Tuesday terrorist attacks on New York and Washington in the United States.

In a speech at a public meeting of the United Nations Security Council which started at noon Wednesday, Wang Yingfan said international terrorism causes tremendous losses of life and property of innocent civilians and seriously endangers human society and political and economic orders of countries, thus constituting a serious potential danger against international peace and security.

The Chinese government, he said, always condemns and opposes all terrorist violence.

He also said that the terrorist attacks Tuesday which stunned the world took place in the United States, but also represented an open challenge to the international community as a whole.

"We support the United Nations in strengthening its work in preventing and fighting terrorism and favor continued strengthening of cooperation among member states, in practically implementing the relevant international conventions against terrorism and in bringing to justice terrorist criminals," Wang said.

He said the Security Council, as an organ with its primary responsibility of maintaining international peace and security, should also play a due role in this respect.
