Cross-Straits Research Center Holds 1st Annual Meeting

The Mainland-Based Research Center of Cross-Straits Relations held its first annual meeting in Beijing Wednesday.

Over 40 research fellows attended the meeting which was presided over by Tang Shubei, director of the research center.

Wang Zaixi, deputy director of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council and advisor to the center, said a favorable change has been scored in recent years.

China's principle on Taiwan has won better understanding from a growing number of Taiwan compatriots. Economic and cultural cooperation and exchanges of personnel between both sides of the Taiwan Straits have increased. There is a rising desire for direct links in trade, transport, and mail and postal services between the two sides.

Wang said his center will give full play to its role in strengthening research on problems emerging in Taiwan and cross-straits relations and contributing to the reunification of the motherland.

The center was set up in Beijing on September 6, 2000 by the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council.
