US Embassy in Jakarta Closed Temporarily

The United States embassy here was temporarily closed Wednesday following the attacks against the World Trade Center building in New York and the Pentagon building in Washington D.C. on Tuesday.

Anton, a local staff member of the embassy, told reporters that he had received the information on the embassy's temporary closure on Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, young couple Reza and Ria were the first Indonesians who put a red rose and a white orchid to express their condolences to the American people.

They put the flowers in front of the U.S. embassy's gate, which was tightly guarded by Indonesian policemen.

According to the Antara News Agency, the U.S. consulate general in Surabaya, capital of East Java province, was also closed temporarily on Wednesday.

In the incident on Tuesday, two hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center twin towers while another plunged into the Pentagon, inflicting enormous property and life losses on the country.
