Tanzania Strongly Condemns Terrorist Attacks in US

Tanzania has strongly condemned the terrorist attacks on several places in the United States on Tuesday, according to a government statement available Wednesday.

In the statement issued on Tuesday night, Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Jakaya Kikwete said the government of Tanzania had learnt "with shock and consternation the barbaric and cowardly terrorist attacks" in New York and Washington.

"Having suffered terrorist attacks ourselves, we feel and understand what the Americans are experiencing from the attack and we condemn it in the strongest terms," said the foreign minister.

He further noted that the government and people of Tanzania have been saddened by the loss of lives and destruction of property in the attacks.

"We join the people of America in the grief and send our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wish the injured speedy recovery," said Kikwete in the statement.

"We sincerely hope the perpetrators of this heinous crime will be tracked down, apprehended and brought to justice," he added.

On August 7, 1998, the U.S. Embassy in Tanzania was hit by a similar terrorist bombing, which killed 11 people and injured 86 others. A nearly simultaneous blast at the U.S. Embassy in neighboring Kenya killed 213 people and injured over 5,000.
