China's Top Legislator Meets Vice-Chairman of Russian State Duma

China's Top Legislator Meets Vice-Chairman of Russian State Duma
Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, said Wednesday that the new type of strategic partnership between China and Russia will contribute to regional and world peace, stability and development.

Li made the remarks during a meeting with Vladimir Lukin, vice- chairman of the State Duma (Lower House) of Russia, who arrived here for an international forum on China and the world in the 21st century.

Li noted that the strategic partnership between the two countries has grown quite smoothly over the past several years and has resulted in satisfactory outcomes.

"The new type of state-to-state relations comply to the fundamental interests of the peoples in our two countries, and will contribute to safeguarding and promoting regional and world peace, stability and development," he said.

Chinese President Jiang Zemin paid a state visit to Russia in July, and signed with Russian President Vladimir Putin the Sino- Russian good-neighborly treaty of friendship and cooperation. That treaty laid a solid legal basis for long-term stable growth of China-Russia relations, Li said.

Premier Zhu's current visit to Russia will make the cooperation in various areas between the two countries more effective, he said.

Li praised Lukin for making special contributions to China- Russia relations, and to the exchanges between the parliaments of the two countries in particular.

Lukin said he believes China-Russia relations will continue to grow in a stable manner for a long period of time under the guidance of the treaty, and he himself will work for that.
