Sino-US Phone Calls Surge After Terrorist Attacks in the United States

The number of phone calls between China and the United States surged tenfold between 21:00 on September 11 and 8:00 on September 12 in Shanghai, one of the country's three out-of-China communication links, following Tuesday's terrorist attacks in the United States, sources said Wednesday.

The surge seriously jammed long-distance call routes and only 30 percent of the calls directed to the United States could be put through, considerably below the normal 65 percent. Calls to New York and Washington were even more difficult to connect.

The increase in the number of calls was attributed to the people's concern about the safety of their relatives and friends in the US The number of phone calls directed to Britain and Canada also increased greatly during the same period.

The number of phone calls from the United States to Shanghai witnessed no marked changes, sources said.
