FM Spokesman: Chinese Government Concerned About Americans in China

The Chinese government is concerned over the situation of US citizens who are working, doing business, traveling or studying in China, said Zhu Bangzao, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, Wednesday.

He said that the Chinese Foreign Ministry, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation (MOFTEC), and the Ministry of Education expressed sympathy for these US citizens, and are ready to help them resolve any difficulties they are facing.

Zhu added that the relevant central and local departments have strengthened security around foreign embassies, consulates, and commercial institutes so as to guarantee the normal lives of the US citizens in China.

He said that Washington and New York of the US were attacked on the evening of September 11, shocking the world.

According to the instructions of Chinese President Jiang Zemin and the Chinese government, he said, the Chinese embassy and all consulates in the US, and its permanent mission to the United Nations expressed sympathy for the staff in Chinese institutions, Chinese students, overseas Chinese, and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan compatriots in the US, and all efforts will be made to find possible Chinese casualties, Zhu said.

The spokesman said that according to an investigation, one Chinese person was injured, and has been sent to hospital. The Chinese embassy and consulate general in the US, and its permanent mission to the United Nations are continuing to get relevant information.

Zhu noted that the Chinese embassy in the US and consulate general in New York have opened special telephone lines to contact Chinese victims and will offer necessary help to them.
