Hong Kong Chief Executive Condemns Terrorism Acts
Hong Kong Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa Wednesday strongly condemned the terrorism acts in New York and Washington, a government release said.
Tung told a media session at the Central Government Offices that he was deeply saddened and shocked by what happened in New York and Washington. "Acts of terrorism are not acceptable," he emphasized.
"I have written to President Bush to express my condolences to those families who have lost their beloved ones," Tung said.
"We have met this morning to review how these incidents might affect Hong Kong. We support the decision of the Stock Exchange to open today. Yes, the market has gone down substantially, but given these circumstances, this sort of ups and downs will be expected.
The important thing is to know that the market is functioning very normally," the chief executive said.
"As a government, we are watching very carefully what's happening all around. Hong Kong's citizens should not be unduly worried," he added.
