U.S. Marine Corps in Okinawa on Maximum Alert
The U.S. Marine Corps in Okinawa went on maximum alert at 11:30 p.m. (local time) Tuesday following terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, Kyodo News reported.
The report quoted the press office of the U.S. Marines as saying that all U.S. military bases in Okinawa went on "level D" alert, the top among five alert categories used by the U.S. Marines.
The majority of the U.S. Marines are stationed in Okinawa.
Security was also tightened at other U.S. bases in Japan such as Yokosuka naval base, southwest of Tokyo, Misawa air base in Aomori Prefecture, and Sasebo naval base in Nagasaki Prefecture.
The move came after two aircraft crashed into the twin buildings of the World Trade Center in New York. In Washington, the Pentagon and several other federal buildings were also attacked.
