Hijacker Sentenced to 12 Years in Prison

A man who hijacked a plane to Taiwan about eight years ago was sentenced to 12 years in prison Tuesday in Changchun, capital of northeast China's Jilin Province.

Han Shuxue, a doctor of a local hospital in Changchun, conspired with Li Xiangyu to hijack an airplane flying from Changchun to Fuzhou, capital of southeast China's Fujian Province, on November 12, 1993.

They used scalpels as weapons to force pilots to fly the plane to Taiwan and later landed at the airport in Taipei. Han and Li were detained by Taiwan police right away.

Han was returned to the Chinese mainland on June 28, 2001, and Li was returned earlier in 1999 and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
