U.N. Building Closed, Opening Session Postponed
The United Nations building in New York was closed Tuesday, with the opening of the 56th session of the U.N. General Assembly delayed until further notice, U.N. police said.
The session was scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Tuesday local time. Police only allow people to go out of the 39-story U.N. secretariat building and the entire U.N. compound, banning all personnel incoming. Telephone contact with the U.N. spokesman's office seems impossible.
The security measure was taken after the two 110-story towers of the New York-based World Trade Center collapsed Tuesday morning as a result of two planes crashing into the landmark buildings.
