S. Korea Bans Beef Import From Japan for Mad-Cow Disease
South Korea said Monday it will ban the import beef and processed beef products from Japan where a dairy cow suspected of having mad-cow disease has been found in Chiba Prefecture.
The Agriculture Ministry said the ban is a temporary measure pending results of the Japanese government investigation into the suspected mad-cow infection, the first case reported in Japan.
In Tokyo, the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said the cow, a 5-year-old Holstein, has been destroyed.
The Japanese health ministry said it is most likely that the cow was infected through animal-based feed.
