HK Sports Chiefs Leave for Torch Lighting Ceremony for National Games

Hong Kong Sports chiefs and athletes representative left Monday for Beijing to attend the torch lighting ceremony for the Ninth National Games.

Timothy Fok Tsun-ting and Paul Leung Sai-wah, chairman and vice- chairman of the Organizing Committee for the Preparation of the Hong Kong Delegation to the Ninth National Games, departed for the ceremony.

To be officiated by a top Chinese leader, the Torch Lighting Ceremony will be held outside the People's Great Hall at 10 am, on Tuesday.

After igniting the torch, the Chinese leader will deliver it to the Minister of State Sports General Administration Yuan Weimin, who will then pass the torch to Olympic gymnastics champion Liu Xuan, who will ignite the torches of athletes from all provinces, municipalities and associations.

After that, swimmer Sherry Tsai Hiu-wai will represent the Hong Kong delegation to join athletes from all provinces, municipalities and associations in the torch relay to be held at Tiananmen Square.

The Hong Kong torch will be transported by train to Hung Hom Railway Station, Hong Kong. A ceremony welcoming the arrival of the torch will be held at the Piazza of the Hong Kong Cultural Center on September 16. The torch will be sent off to Guangzhou at a ceremony at Wan Chai Sports Ground on October 28.
