HK Registered Moderate Rise in Port Cargo, Containers in 2nd Quarter

Hong Kong registered a three percent rise in its total port cargo throughput to 45.5 million tons in the second quarter of 2001, according to figures released Monday by the Census and Statistics Department.

Within this total, inward port cargo increased by four percent to 28.4 million tons, while outward port cargo remained virtually unchanged from a year earlier, at 17.1 million tons.

When compared with the first quarter of 2001 on a seasonally adjusted basis, total port cargo throughput decreased by six percent in the second quarter of 2001. Within this total, both inward and outward port cargo shrank by 6 percent.
