Li's Visit Promotes All-round Relations with Vietnam

After three busy days of talks with top leaders of Vietnam, Li Peng, acting as senior Party official and top legislator of China, returned to Beijing Monday reporting a number of achievements.

This was the first high-level visit paid by a Chinese leader after the Vietnamese Communist Party (CPV) elected its new leadership and formulated the blueprint for the development of the nation in April. As Vietnam is an important friendly neighboring country, the tour is widely regarded as a strategic diplomatic action of China.

Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and chairman of the Standing Committee of National People's Congress, was received with great warmth by the Vietnamese.

He held talks and meetings with CPV's new General Secretary, state president, chairman of the National Assembly and Prime Minister. And analysts here say that the interactions during this visit reflected the commitments set forth by the general secretaries of the two parties to develop future-oriented, good- neighborly relations.

Both sides emphasized that they should work to carry out the agreements concerning border demarcation and fishery cooperation in the Beibu Gulf which have already been signed.

It has been agreed that there is a great deal of potential in economic and trade cooperation between the two countries, and such cooperation should be raised to the same level as the political relations between China and Vietnam.

Both China and Vietnam are socialist countries under the leadership of communist parties; they have solid foundations for exchanges and cooperation in all fields, both sides maintained.

Both sides pledged to strengthen parliamentarian exchanges in regard to legislation, and complement and assist each other in international and regional parliamentarian organizations.

China and Vietnam are neighboring countries with traditional friendship, and Li's visit this time is expected to further promote the all-round development of bilateral ties in the new century.
