Iran Establishes Women News Agency

A news agency specialized in reporting issues concerning Iranian women was established Sunday, the official Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported.

The Women's News Agency of Iran (WNAI), the country's third agency after IRNA and the Iran Student News Agency, will focus much of its attention on women's status as well as the problems and challenges facing them.

The agency, which was founded on Iran's Mother's Day marking the birthday anniversary of Prophet Mohammad's daughter Hazrat Fatemeh, is committed to "publish speedy, comprehensive and elaborate report on women's issues," IRNA said.

Head of the managerial board of WNAI Shahla Habibi said that the agency has got license for its establishment and operation from the Culture and Islamic Guidance Ministry.

The latest communications and information technology will be tapped by WNAI in an effort to offer proper images of Iranian women, Habibi said.

She added that many experts regard that the current state media have not done well in improving the cultural and social status of women, expressing hope that WNAI can "serve as an important backup and strategic measure in this regard."

Recent years have seen Iranian woman's enthusiastic participation in social activities.

Iranian women now have their own taxi agencies run by women drivers, and in sports arena, they are even allowed to hold auto rally race accompanied by male guides.
