South China's Hainan Mounts Fight Against Drugs
The island province of Hainan in south China has redoubled efforts to combat drugs since the beginning of this year.
According to local sources, the campaign to build narcotics- free neighborhood, which was listed as one of key tasks to be fulfilled this year, has been carried out successfully.
Committees for drug control have been set up in 20 counties and cities of Hainan, where 120 neighborhoods have been claimed free of narcotics.
Public security bureaus in 17 counties and cities have set up drug control enforcement detachments. In the first seven months of the year, local police dealt with 438 cases involving drug trafficking. As a result, 403 drug traffickers were apprehended, 27.23 kg of heroin, and 24 kg of cocaine were also seized.
There are now 14,748 registered drug addicts in Hainan. Ten compulsory drug-relief rehabilitation centers have been built in Hainan, but can only accommodate 1,800 people, according to the local sources.
In some villages and urban neighborhoods, centers have been established to spread drug-awareness information.
