Macao Promotes Free Education by More Funds

The Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) government has allocated more than 400 million patacas (about US$50 million) for free-tuition education in the 2001-2002 semester.

Macao practices now a system of ten-year free education, which covers all primary and junior high schools, as well as the preparatory courses of primary school.

The authorities said that this semester's government subsidy on free education has gone up slightly due to the increase of the number of junior high school students.

The number of students has exceeded 100,000 in the 116 primary and high schools in Macao, statistics show.

Free education was introduced by the Macao government in 1964.
