Fuzhou Honors Excellent Teachers

This capital of the eastern province of Fujian held a ceremony Sunday to honor the 10 top headmasters and the 10 best teachers of the city to mark Teacher's Day, that falls on September 10 every year.

Each headmaster and teacher was given a bonus of 5,000 yuan (US$602).

A top municipal official said the selection of the top 10 headmasters and teachers will be held every other year to promote teachers' sense of responsibility and the education quality of the city.

September 10 is the Teacher's Daily of People's Republic of China. In the year 1984, Wang Zishen, former president of Beijing Normal University, suggested to establish a festivial day for the Chinese teachers. On January 21, 1985, the ninth session of the Sixth NPC Standing Committee formally decided to fix the September 10 of every year as the Teacher's Day of China.
