IGAD Expects Breakthrough in Sudan Peace Talks

The Inter-Government Authority for Development (IGAD) is expecting a breakthrough in the peace negotiations of the raging war in southern Sudan, Sunday Times newspaper reported.

Bashir Attalla, executive secretary of IGAD, was quoted as saying that a permanent negotiations committee has been appointed and has been in Nairobi for the last two weeks working on ways to implement the declaration of principles that was signed for a ceasefire, separation of religion and state and the constitutional conference.

He said the permanent negotiation team which was appointed after the IGAD heads of state summit in June this year will bring together the government and the Sudan People Liberation Army/ Movement (SPLA/M).

The executive secretary made the remarks on Saturday when meeting with Peter Odoyo, assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Kenya.

Attalla also welcomed the Sudan peace negotiations going on in Libya and Egypt, saying the move will also complement the work of IGAD.

Nairobi is the headquarters of the IGAD secretariat for Sudan peace, and Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi is the chairman of the peace initiative.

Attalla appealed to the world donors to financially support the IGAD secretariat in Nairobi to ensure that it meets its objectives of bring peace and harmony in Sudan.
