Armed Robbers Get Away With 2 Million Zimbabwean Dollars in Harare

A six-man armed robbery gang got away with about 2 million Zimbabwean dollars (36,000 U.S. dollars) after hitting one bank branch and a shop in Harare on Friday morning, The Herald newspaper reported on Saturday.

The new gang ended the peaceful pause in robberies following successful police action against other gangs, especially the Karimanzira and Malula gangs.

The robbers, who got away with about one million Zimbabwean dollars (18,000) U.S. dollars) each from the Standard Chartered Bank's Mount Pleasant branch and the Eastlea shop, had also attempted to rob Standard Chartered Bank's Karigamombe branch in central Harare, but they only got away with a trunk of papers.

Two Standard Chartered Bank employees at the Karigamombe branch sustained minor head injuries from gunshot shrapnel.

Police spokesman Assistant Commissioner Wayne Bvudzijena said on Friday that police had launched a manhunt for the robbers.

Bvudzijena said anyone with details leading to the whereabouts of the suspected robbers should contact the nearest police station.
