Roundup: Political Parties in Bangladesh Gear up Electioneering

With the national election only three weeks away, the contestants of different parties have geared up electioneering in the capital and across the country.

Apart from the door-to-door campaign projection rallies, processions are being organized to woo the voters.

The candidates, particularly of the major parties including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party(BNP), Awami League and Jatiya Party (National Party), have by this time set up election camps in different city areas from where they are moving from door to door seeking the blessings of the voters.

Besides, different socio-cultural bodies are also active issuing statements and organizing rallies in favor of their respective candidates.

BNP Friday released its election manifesto with party chief and former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia declaring that if elected its first task would be to restore law and order to protect the life and property of people.

The manifesto contains at least 10 fresh commitments including a 500-strong parliament and increased reserved seats for women; three new ministries for freedom fighters, expatriates and garments; independent anti-corruption commission with neutral persons; no anti-islamic law and close ties with Muslim countries and review of the Ganges water-sharing treaty and Chittagong peace treaty.

Bitterly criticizing the BNP-led four-party alliance, Awami League President and immediate past prime minister Sheikh Hasina Friday said that the four parties have made unholy alliance to destroy the country's independence and sovereignty.

Addressing three massive election meetings in the country as part of her election campaign, Hasina called upon all pro liberation forces of the country to work jointly so that Awami League could win the election and develop the country in line with the spirit of the War of Liberation.

Meanwhile, political conflicts are occurring in the country every day. At least 90 people were injured Friday in clashes between BNP and Awami League.
