Chinese Finance Minister Meets AFMM Delegates

Chinese Finance Minister Xiang Huaicheng met in Suzhou on September 7 with the heads of the delegations from Singapore, Brunei, Australia, Canada, Malaysia, and Thailand, as well as Managing Director of the World Bank Sven Sandstrom.

They are here to attend the Eighth APEC Finance Ministers Meeting (AFMM) scheduled to open Saturday morning.

Xiang briefed the guests on the agenda of the impending AFMM, and exchanged views with them on the economic and financial situation in the world and in the Asia-Pacific region.

He said globalization is an irresistible trend of the world, and what needs to be done at present is to make globalization benefit the majority of people. Currently, some relevant parties haven't prepared well for the globalization trend ideologically and in necessary systems.

Xiang said that he believed the majority would benefit from globalization through the common efforts of all parties concerned.

He noted that the world economic situation has changed a lot since last year, and the members of the APEC will gather here to find ways to maintain economic growth. He voiced his hope that the AFMM would help overcome the current difficulties and strive for common prosperity of the APEC economies.

On China's economic situation, the minister said, China has carried out microeconomic policies with a proactive financial policy as its core, thus China's economy has maintained its growth momentum amid a global slowdown. This will help promote confidence in regional economic stability.

The heads of the delegations expressed their wishes for the success of the AFMM, and expected to achieve the set goals through wide-ranging discussions.
