S.Korean Ambassador to China Appointed Unification Minister

South Korean President Kim Dae-jung appointed the country's Ambassador to China Hong Soon-young as the new unification minister in a cabinet reshuffle replacing five ministers.

The cabinet shakeup came four days after the ruling coalition government divorced Tuesday as the National Assembly, parliament, passed a non-confidence motion against Unification Minister Lim Dong-won Monday afternoon.

After the non-confidence motion was passed last Monday, the cabinet, presidential secretariat team and the MDP leadership resigned en masse, giving President Kim a free hand in a sweeping reshuffle.

Five ministers replaced

President Kim Dae-jung replaced Friday five ministers including the minister of Unification Lim Dong-won.

He appointed former vice minister of agriculture and forestry as minister of agriculture and forestry. The Millennium Democratic Party assemblyman Yoo Yong-tae was appointed as the minister of labour, National Tax Administration head Ahn Jeong-nam, as the minister of construction and transportation and MDP assemblyman Yoo Sam-nam, as the minister of maritime and fishery.
