Israeli Soldier Killed, One Wounded by Palestinian Gunmen

An Israeli soldier was shot dead and a female soldier seriously injured Thursday evening by Palestinian gunmen at the Israeli side of the Green Line that separates Israel from the occupied Palestinian territories.

The injured was taken to the Hillel Yaffa Hospital in the northern Israeli city of Hadera, and her condition was described as being "very serious," Israel Radio reported.

The drive-by shooting attack occurred when Palestinian gunmen overtook the car the two victims were driving and opened fire on them. The attackers then fled to the Palestinian side of the Green Line.

Israeli troops rushed to the scene of the incident and started a combing operation, the radio added.

The attack followed an Israeli air raid on the West Bank city of Tulkarm earlier in the day to assassinate a leader of Fatah, the mainstay of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO).

Two Palestinians were killed in the air raid while the Fatah leader was injured.

More than 750 people, including over 150 Israelis, have been killed since the eruption of the Palestinian intifada (uprising) against Israeli occupation in September last year.
