Israeli PM to Hold Special Meeting on Green Line PlanIsraeli Prime Minster Ariel Sharon is scheduled to hold a special meeting Thursday night on a plan of setting up a closed military zone along the 1967 Green Line border, the website of the leading Israeli Ha'aretz daily reported.According to the plan, which was announced by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Wednesday morning, the military zone will be located in the narrow coastal plain bordering the West Bank cities of Tulkarm and Qalqilya to protect the Israelis from Palestinian attacks. But the plan was frozen by the Israeli government on Wednesday noon, when Sharon was in Moscow on his first visit to Russia since he came to power in March. Security sources, however, hinted Wednesday night that Sharon's "sudden" intervention would be temporary, and the plan would be implemented soon. Over the past, especially since the Israeli-Palestinian conflict broke out a year ago, the Israeli army has often imposed closure on the West Bank and Gaza Strip for such reasons as carrying out military operations, curbing unrest and setting up buffer zone between the Jewish settlers and the Palestinians. |
