Vice-Premier on South-North Water Diversion ProjectChinese Vice-Premier Wen Jiabao called for scientific planning in the implementation of the South-North Water Diversion Project during his September 4-6 inspection tour in Shandong and Jiangsu provinces.Wen said that measures should be taken to save water resources, curb environmental pollution and maintain biological balance in preparing for the construction of the huge project. The South-North water diversion project will pump the rich water resources in southern China to the north to ease water shortage there. The official said that to embed the idea of water-saving in the water-destitute northern area as well as water-abundant southern China is a prerequisite in solving the problem of water shortage. Meanwhile, effective measures should be taken to prevent the diverted water from pollution. A rational water management and pricing mechanism should take shape when the project is conducted, according to Wen. He also urged governments at all levels to protect the eco- system so as to benefit the regions along the water-diverting route.
