Finance Official Unveils Plan for China's Farmland

China's vice-minister of finance set goals for several agricultural sectors during the 10th Five-Year Plan Period at the National Agricultural Conference hosted by the National Agricultural Development Office in Changchun recently.

Zhang Youcai said China wants to turn 182 million mu (12.13 million hectares) of low and medium yield farmland into high-yield farmland before 2005. He said at least 100 million mu (6.66 million hectares) of those fields will be improved using savable irrigation equipment. Of the total, 41.63 million mu (2.78 million hectares) will be used for fine grain planting and 13.43 million mu (895,300 hectares) for fine feed crops.

Zhang also revealed that 3.76 million mu (250,660 hectares) of water will be devoted to fish farming and 9.6 million mu (640,000 hectares) of fields in the northeast will be planted with trees to protect against encroaching sand.
