US Formally Stated to Have NMD Consultation with China End of This Month

The US White House made a formal statement Wednesday that it would discuss with China on the National Missile Defense (NMD) issue by the end of September.

According to the statement by the White House, the NMD strategy supported by the Bush administration aims to cut global offensive nuclear weapons and curb the threats of nuclear war. And the country believes the missile defense system will be able to make contribution to the stability of the Asia-Pacific region.

The statement says that the US officials will brief China side the latest progress made in its earlier meeting with Asia, Europe and Russia.

However, the statement also denies that the Bush administration is courting for China's support of the US missile defense system by giving up the US stand of opposing Beijing's expansion of nuclear missile armament, as reported in some media of the US last week.

China is willing to hold "serious" dialogue with the US on NMD issue, if the later makes an official offer, said Zhu Bangzao, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman on Tuesday.

Zhu reiterated, China will not join any arms race, and will not consent to the US' move in seeking for a strategic supremacy through NMD.
