China's Germproof Materials Industry Takes Shape

China is developing a germproof materials manufacturing industry, according to sources with the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Zhan Wenshan, director of the Physics and Chemistry Technology Institute under the academy, said that with the improvements in living standards in China, people have become more and more interested in durable commodities with germproof functions, such as hygiene products, articles for daily use, water disposal vessels and food packages.

China's technology for producing anti-bacteria complexing agents has obtained an international advanced level, said Yan Qing, a research fellow with the State Engineering Plastic Research Institute.

The institute now provides technology backup to a number of big high-tech companies in China, such as Haier.

Germproof plastics have been widely used in producing household appliances, fiber and painting materials, toys and utensils in China. In recent years, nano-technology has also been introduced into China's fledging germproof materials industry.

China's output of anti-bacteria complexing agents reached 200 tons last year. The experts estimated that it will amount to 500 tons by 2005, when the output value of germproof commodities is expected to exceed 40 billion yuan.
