DPRK Urges US to Withdraw Troops from South Korea

The withdrawal of US troops from South Korea is the most urgent issue for maintaining peace and security in the Korean peninsula and northeast Asia, a spokesman for the DPRK Foreign Ministry said Thursday.

In a statement to mark the 56th anniversary of U.S. troops intrusion onto the peninsula, the spokesman said the U.S. military presence in South Korea has constituted a major obstacle to the improvement of inter-Korean and DPRK-U.S. relations, and the achievement of peace and reunification of the Korean peninsula.

Noting that the U.S. military presence has put the Korean nation under the danger of war for the past half century, he called for immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops from South Korea.

He said the U.S. military buildup and frequent war exercises by U.S. troops have aggravated tensions on the Korean peninsula and the northeast Asian region and increased the danger of war.

The tough and hostile policy of the new U.S. administration toward the DPRK has made U.S. troops stationed in South Korea even more dangerous, he added.
