West to Enjoy Preferential Tech Policy

Vice Minister of Science and Technology Deng Nan said Thursday in Xi'an that the western region will enjoy preferential policies from the central government to develop technology.

In her keynote speech addressed to the China Western Forum which opened Tuesday, she elaborated that more will be invested in key laboratories, research and development bases and tech- incubators in the economically backward west, following the 278 million yuan (33 million U.S. dollars) allocated by the central government last year.

She made the promise that the wages of technology personnel will be increased and more training opportunities including international programs will be offered.

Meanwhile, tech-heavy start-ups will enjoy less limitations such as no restriction on private individual ownership, she added.

In her speech, the Vice Minister pointed out that less than one third of Chinese technology personnel work in the western region and the lack of talent and money has led to a very weak foundation for technology advancement.
