Hainan Elects New Chairman of Provincial People's Congress

The 2nd Hainan Provincial People's Congress elected Bai Keming as the new chairman of its Standing Committee Thursday during its 5th meeting in this capital of Hainan Province.

Bai, a native of Jingbian, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, graduated from the Department of Missile Engineering at the Harbin Military Engineering Institute in 1966.

He has previously served as deputy division chief, division chief and deputy director of the General Office of the Ministry of Education and State Education Commission, head of Education, Science, Culture and the Public Health Group of the Research Office of the State Council, and secretary-general of the Department of Publicity of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

Bai also served as deputy head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee and then deputy director of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee, and president of People's Daily.

He was appointed secretary of the CPC Hainan Province Committee on August 2001.
