Joint HK, Guangdong Economic Forum Held in HK

To promote closer economic integration between Hong Kong and Guangdong, a tripartite forum for leading businessmen, academics and senior government officials from the two places was held Thursday.

Antony Leung, Financial Secretary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, officiated at the Forum's opening session. He said that business opportunities will increase greatly for Hong Kong and Guangdong with China's imminent entry into the World Trade Organization and Chinese economy's continuous integration with the global economy.

He said under the new circumstances both sides should explore new co-operative opportunities in fields such as high technologies, logistic management, professional services and tourism.

Wu Xiaofeng, Vice President of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) Guangdong, said co-operation between both sides had changed from a non-government and unprompted level to a level of comprehensive and government-driven with Hong Kong's return to the motherland and the successful practice of "one country, two systems."

Great progress have been made in the areas of tourism, environmental protection and development of the Shenzhen Western Corridor during this year, she said.

Wu also expressed the hope that both sides will continue to cooperate on a win-win base.

The forum, brainstorming on strategic co-operation issues, was co-organized by the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, the University of Hong Kong and CCPIT Guangdong.
