Gas Development Era Approaching: Academician

China expects to discover more reserves of natural gas in the coming 10 years, said Qiu Zhongjian, director-general of the China Petroleum Society, Thursday.

Qiu, also an academician with the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said that this means the coming of an era of large- scale gas development in China.

Qiu is attending an activity of the Science and Technology Month in the national capital.

Qiu predicted that the total gas reserves in the country are 38 trillion cu. m.; and by 2005, China's annual output of gas will hit 50 billion cb. m.

It is learned that by 2000, the proved gas reserves of China totaled 2.56 trillion cb m. China produced 15.2 billion cb m of gas in 1990, and the figure for 2000 was 26.2 billion cb m, an increase of 58 percent in 10 years.

Qiu said that the reason that he said the gas era is approaching is that China has discovered three large gas-bearing zones in 10 years, namely the Tarim, Ordos and Qaidam gas zones in the western part of China. Meanwhile, large gas reserves were also found in southwestern Sichuan Province, an old gas base of the country.

According to Qiu, the proved gas reserves in the Tarim zone is expected to hit one trillion cu m within five years, the amount in the Ordos zone to reach one trillion cu m within two to three years and the figure is expected to increase to 300 billion cu m in the Qaidam gas zone within five years.

Based on the predicted gas reserves, the three zones are expected to provide, respectively, 20 billion, 11 billion and 3 billion cu m of gas annually over a long period of time, according to Qiu.

The proved gas reserves in Sichuan is to reach one trillion cu m within five years and the gas zone could provide 15 billion cu m annually over a long period of time, Qiu said.
