Fretilin Wins East Timor's Election

Fretilin, the biggest political party in East Timor, won the August 30 election, United Nations chief electoral officer Carlos Valenzuela announced in Dili, capital of East Timor, on Thursday.

The Detikcom online news service quoted the results of the vote count as reporting that Fretilin gained 57.3 percent of the votes counted.

An estimated 91 percent of East Timorese voters went to the polls to choose 13 district and 75 national representatives to sit on the constituent assembly, which will draft a founding constitution and become the parliament.

Fretilin has won 12 of the 13 district seats and 43 national representatives.

Trailing in second place is the Social Democratic Party with 8. 18 percent of the votes counted or six national representatives.

A new party, the Timorese Social Democratic Association, also won six national representatives in the constituent assembly.

It was reported that political parties will have four days to appeal, while the count is being certified and confirmed. Official, confirmed results will be announced on September 10.
