Legend Sees Strong Growth in Server Sales

China's largest computer maker Legend Group maintains strong growth in sales of its iServers series for the second quarter this year, maintaining its first place among domestic server makers, according to a report from International Data Corporation (IDC).

The report attributes the growth partly to increasing orders from educational and postal sectors and China's western region, where demand for high-end servers is on the increase.

Legend and other four domestic server makers, Langchao, Founder, Powerleader and Great Wall, are on the top-ten list of China's server market, the report said.

China's lucrative server market has never lost its appeal to foreign firms. Ever since 1997, IBM, Sun and Compaq have taken a firm footing in China's server market, taking a lion's share (85 per cent in 1997 and 72 per cent in 1998) in the industry.

Domestic firms like Legend have been catching up, chipping away at shares from foreign counterparts. In 2000, the market share of domestic server makers surged to 41 per cent from 15 per cent in 1997.
