China to Improve Environment in Western Regions

The environment in China's western regions will become the priority of the country's forestry industry, said a senior official Wednesday at the Western Forum being held in Xi'an.

Li Yucai, vice-director of the State Forestry Administration, said that the poor quality environment in the western regions is the major impediment to local social and economic development and this has become an urgent task in the national strategy to develop western regions.

Li said that the Chinese government had formulated and implemented a series of policies and measures to improve the western ecological environment over the past 50 years. He said that China will continue its efforts to protect natural forests and animal species as well as to construct more nature reserves in the region.

Efforts will also be made to improve the environment around the upper reaches of the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, and the sandy and drought regions in north China so as to prevent the western environment from deteriorating further.
