Guangdong Women Active in Political Life

Women in south China's Guangdong Province have been active in participating in the country's political life.

It was learned from a local working conference on women and children's social status that the number of women officials in the province reached 740,000 last year, accounting for 36.4 percent of its total and up 5.8 percentage points from 1995.

In rural areas, some 20,000 women became grassroots officials through direct village elections.

Also, female leaders account for 11.5 percent of the leadership of social groups.

The first 10-year development plan for women and children in the province will be issued in the near future to further safeguard the rights and interests of women and children.
