US Secure Title at Women's Ice Hockey Tournament in Beijing

Olympic champions the United States eased past hosts China 12-1 on Wednesday for their third straight victory at the Beijing International Women's Ice Hockey Tournament, securing a top finish two days before the conclusion of the three-team event.

The American women, gold medalists at the Winter Olympic Games in Nagano in 1998, took the lead one minute 42 seconds into the game through Krissy Wendell.

Sun Rui, 20, beat the American goalkeeper Sara Decosra after a solo run to make up the deficit for China at 6:25.

The United States, who beat China 9-1 in the opening match here on Sunday and whitewashed Russia 9-0 the following day, added two more goals to lead 3-1 at the end of the first period.

The remaining of the match was dominated by the Americans who scored five and four in the second and third periods respectively for an eventual easy victory.

The United States, 9-0 winners over Russia on Monday, now have six points from three wins. China collected two points with a 4-3 win over Russia while Russia have none after two consecutive defeats.

The Russians, bronze medalists at the world women's championship, will play the Americans on Thursday and hosts China, six-placers at the world championship, on Friday.

The United States, Russia and China are competing in the three- squad tournament which adopts double round-robin format. All the three teams will take part in the Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, the United States next year, with China and U.S. drawn to the same group.
