Uzbekistan Sees Great Potential in Developing Ties with China

Uzbek President Islam Abduganiyevich Karimov said Tuesday that Uzbekistan and China have been enjoying good relations and there is still great potential for further developing ties between the two countries, said a report from the Uzbek capital of Tashkent.

Karimov made the remarks when new Chinese Ambassador to Uzbekistan Zhang Zhiming met him to present his credentials.

Uzbekistan is concerned with everything happening in China, especially economic development, social stability and the ever increasing rise of its international status, said the president.

Karimov said Uzbekistan's aim in joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is to safeguard the stability in Uzbekistan and in Central Asia, to combat terrorism, extremism and separatism and to promote cooperation in the economic field and all cultural activities.

The Chinese ambassador conveyed to Karimov the best regards and sincere wishes from Chinese President Jiang Zemin.
