Philippine Armed Forces Reward Capture of Rebel Leader

Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) paid Wednesday a big reward in cash to a man whose tip led to the capture of a ranking Abu Sayyaf leader.

The reward amounted to 5 million pesos (around 98,000 U.S. dollars) was paid to a local resident who tipped the AFP on Nadzmi Sabdulla, the rebel group leader who was caught later, the ABS-CBN on-line news reported Wednesday.

Sabdulla, together with three other fellows, was arrested on July 8 in the southern city of General Santos. The 40-year old man, also known as Commander Global, was the highest ranking member arrested so far of the most active terrorist group in the country.

Philippine police identified the collared bandit head as spokesman for the Abu Sayyaf during its negotiations with the government under then President Joseph Estrada.

The Philippine government has once offered one million pesos (about 19,600 dollars) for information leading to the arrest of every one of the five Abu Sayyaf commanders including Sabdulla.

Earlier, the AFP gave two men one million pesos each for their information that resulted in the arrest of other leaders of the bandit Abu Sayyaf Group.

According to AFP, a total of 25 million pesos (about 490,000 dollars) have so far been paid as reward to people who offered information on the whereabouts of Abu Sayyaf personalities on the wanted list.
