Mubarak, Arafat Agree to Push Forward Peace Process: Palestinian Diplomat

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat on Tuesday agreed to make efforts to push forward the flagging Mideast peace process during their talks at Egypt's Mediterranean city of Alexandria, a senior Palestinian diplomat said.

"The two leaders agreed to promote efforts of trying to reactivate the peace process in the region," Palestinian Ambassador in Cairo Zohdi el Kedra, who was present at the meeting, told Xinhua in a telephone interview.

Kedra said that Arafat and Mubarak had discussed the current situation in the occupied Palestinian territories and ways of dealing with continued Israeli aggressions.

"During the talks, President Arafat made it clear that he is always ready to give hands to all those who wants to stop violence in the region, if Israel really carries out a truce with the Palestinians to go through a peace way," Kedra added.

The talks between Arafat and Mubarak came within the context of "intensive consultations" held by Mubarak at the Arab and international levels to halt Israeli brutalities against the Palestinians and prevent the regional situation from deteriorating, Egyptian officials said.

Arafat, who arrived in Alexandria Monday, is a frequent visitor to Egypt to discuss the peace process with Mubarak, who has been playing a key mediating role in resolving the more than half- century Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
