Shanghai Speeds Up Software Exports

Shanghai, a commercial and financial center in East China, plans to export US$100 million worth of software this year, according to Vice-Mayor Jiang Yiren.

Statistics show that Shanghai exported more than US$40 million worth of software in the first half of this year.

Over the past few years, Shanghai's software industry has witnessed an average annual output increase of about 30 percent.

By 2005, the total turnover in this sector is expected to reach 30 billion yuan (US$3.61 billion), and the total exports, some US$500-600 million.

Jiang said that, owing to the present stagnation in the world information technology industry, most software producers in developed countries are seeking contractors in other countries.

This has provided an unprecedented opportunity for Shanghai, which abounds in skilled but low-priced professionals, he said.
